The same discipline applies: nothing goes into the enclosure until the people responsible for it have checked it against the way the panel was designed, documented and approved. Before planning anything, take photos of the open panel and compare them with the layout drawing. Look for spare rail length, room in the ducts for a few extra wires, and whether the module would sit near a drive or another heat source.

On power, the questions are simple but should be written down: which voltage the module needs, which supply in the panel can provide it, how much margin that supply has, and whether the module should have its own breaker or fuse. If the answer is uncertain, a separate small supply is often cleaner than loading an existing one that also feeds safety or control circuits.

Do not forget what sits outside the cabinet. A line side sensor needs a mounting point that does not interfere with guarding, operator access or cleaning, and a cable route back to the panel through an existing gland or a properly rated new entry. Agree that route with maintenance before the installation day, so the technician is not improvising a hole in the enclosure. If the panel is in a washdown or dusty area, the enclosure’s environmental rating has to be preserved after the new entry, which is exactly the kind of point a NEMA rating describes.

Finally, think about heat. One small module rarely changes the thermal balance of a panel, but a cabinet that already runs warm in summer deserves a check before anything is added.

Documentation and compliance: keep the panel’s story consistent

A panel is not only hardware; it is a set of drawings, a bill of materials and, in many cases, a compliance label that describes how it was built. Adding a device without updating that record creates the kind of gap that surfaces during an audit, an insurance visit or the next troubleshooting session at three in the morning.

Identify the panel’s status. Check the nameplate and any certification label, and find the original panel builder if possible.

Ask before modifying. If the panel carries a compliance label, ask the panel builder or your compliance contact whether and how a field modification affects it.

Collect the device documentation. Get the module’s datasheet, wiring diagram and any certification information from the supplier, and let your qualified staff judge it against your requirements.

Update the drawings. Add the device, its supply, its terminals and its signal wires to the schematics and the bill of materials, with a revision note.

Record the change. Log who did the work, when, and under which work order, so the next technician understands what was added and why.

Who signs off, and when

Many monitoring projects stall not on technical grounds but because nobody knew who could say yes. Settle this at the start. Typically, the controls engineer validates the technical solution, the maintenance manager approves the intervention and schedules it in a planned stop, EHS confirms the lockout and electrical safety procedure, and production agrees the time slot. For panels with a compliance label, the panel builder or compliance contact gives their view before the work order is released. Once the module is installed, a short functional check with the controls engineer closes the loop.

How TEEPTRAK is installed

TEEPTRAK measures stops, short stops and OEE automatically. The hardware is a module wired in the machine’s control cabinet and a sensor placed at the line side; it does not connect to the PLC and does not change the machine program. Installation takes about one hour per machine, and OEE is available within 48 hours. Because the module goes into the cabinet, the checks above apply to it like to any added device: the plant’s maintenance and controls teams decide where and how it is mounted and powered, and the panel’s documentation and compliance review stay with the people responsible for them. TEEPTRAK is used in more than 700 plants in more than 30 countries.

Further reading

How to Select Components for UL 508A Control Panels (Michael Blass, Concept Systems Inc.)

Connect any machine: OT/IT integration without a heavy project

Maintenance dashboards for smaller plants: the production data that really belongs

FAQ

Does adding a monitoring module affect a UL 508A panel label? It can, depending on the device and how it is installed.
